Personal Lifecycle Tracker

FastAPI React TypeScript PostgreSQL Docker Kubernetes Kind OpenTelemetry CI/CD Terraform Live Demo API Health Swagger Docs

Personal Lifecycle Tracker manages Renewals, Maintenance, and Warranties for independent users and shared collaborative groups, providing instant action summaries, in-app notifications, and scheduled daily morning email digests.

๐Ÿš€ Live Cloud Deployment & Reviewer Demo (Course Rubric Criterion 8 โ€” 2 Points):

1. Problem Description & System Functionality

Modern households, individuals, and small teams struggle to track scattered recurring commitments:

  • Expired Renewals: Auto-renewing insurance policies, passports, vehicle registrations, and software licenses that expire without advance warning.
  • Neglected Maintenance: Routine servicing for vehicles (oil changes, tire rotations), HVAC filter replacements, and home appliances that cause costly damages when overlooked.
  • Lost Warranties: Expiring electronics and appliance warranties where proof-of-coverage and expiration dates are lost across scattered receipts.
  • Lack of Shared Responsibility: Roommates, couples, and family members duplicate purchases or miss shared deadlines because tracking lives in fragmented personal notes.

Expected Behavior & Core Capabilities

  1. Multi-User Authentication: Secure user registration, password hashing (bcrypt), and stateless JWT token authorization.
  2. Three Core Lifecycle Types:
    • Renewals: Contract end-dates, policy renewals, membership expirations.
    • Maintenance: Recurring check-ups, vehicle inspections, home upkeep.
    • Warranties: Hardware purchase dates, coverage limits, warranty expirations.
  3. Shared Collaborative Groups: Users can create groups (e.g., "Family Home", "Apartment 4B"), invite members by email, and collaborate on shared lifecycle items. Items remain with the group when members leave.
  4. Action Summaries & Reminders Engine: Automatically detects items due within 30 days and overdue items, rendering an instant action dashboard with urgent priority sorting.
  5. Scheduled Morning Digest Simulator: Simulates daily 8:00 AM notification digests delivering upcoming deadlines to users and group members.

Full specification is frozen in product-spec.md and task breakdown in backlog.md.

    • Dockerized multi-app architecture (docker-compose.yaml).
    • Packaged declarative Kind Kubernetes manifests with PersistentVolumeClaims in k8s/.
  5. Observability & Autonomous Incident Response:
    • OpenTelemetry Collector, Prometheus, Loki, Tempo, Grafana in observability/.
    • Autonomous on-call responder in on-call-engineer/ with code-enforced autonomy policy (autonomy-policy.json).

Complete prompt transcripts, context injection strategies, and human verification gates are documented in docs/ai-tools-usage-and-review.md.

4. Quick Start (Development Mode)

Run the full stack with hot reloading (zero host runtime dependencies required, powered entirely by Docker):

# Start full development cluster (PostgreSQL on :5434, Backend on :8003, Frontend on :3003)
make up

# Verify container status
make ps

# Stream logs
make logs

# Tear down containers
make down

Access endpoints:

5. Local Kubernetes Deployment with Kind

Deploy the entire stack to a local Kubernetes cluster using Kind (Kubernetes in Docker):

# 1. Create a local Kind cluster
make kind-up

# 2. Build local images and load them into the Kind cluster
make kind-load

# 3. Apply declarative manifests (PostgreSQL PVC + Backend + Caddy Gateway)
make kind-deploy

# 4. Wait for pod readiness and verify rollout status
make kind-verify

# 5. Tear down Kind cluster when finished
make kind-down

For manifest specifications and port forwarding instructions, see k8s/README.md.

6. Production Mode (Caddy Reverse Proxy)

Test the unified production build locally on port 8088 (single port, Caddy reverse-proxying API & static SPA):

# Build and start production stack
make prod-up

# Verify health via reverse proxy
curl -f http://localhost:8088/health

# Stop production stack
make prod-down

7. Testing & Quality Verification

All verification commands execute in isolated container environments:

# Run full test suite (Backend unit + integration, Frontend Vitest, E2E Playwright)
make test

# Run backend tests only (FastAPI unit tests)
make test-backend

# Run PostgreSQL integration tests (multi-user collaboration, DB transactions)

11. CI/CD Pipeline & Promotion Workflow

The automated GitHub Actions workflow (.github/workflows/ci.yml) provides test-gated delivery structured into two distinct stages:

  1. Parallel Unit Tests: Backend (FastAPI Pytest) and Frontend (TypeScript lint + Vitest) run concurrently.
  2. Docker Compose Integration & E2E: Builds the full stack, starts PostgreSQL, backend, and frontend containers, runs 27 integration tests, and executes 17 Playwright E2E browser journeys.
  3. Stage 1 (Build): Compiles backend and frontend container images, tags each image using the YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS-shortsha pattern (e.g. 20260818-163457-83242da), and pushes them to Amazon ECR.
  4. Stage 2 (Deploy): Pulls the pre-built image artifacts from Amazon ECR and serves them via Docker Compose (docker compose -f docker-compose.prod.yml up -d --no-build), completely eliminating image building during deployment.
  5. Keyless Cloud Authentication (GitHub OIDC): Uses GitHub OIDC (id-token: write) to assume an AWS IAM role (terraform/aws/oidc.tf) to authenticate with ECR and AWS SSM.

Dev-to-Production Promotion Workflow

The manual workflow (.github/workflows/promote-dev-to-prod.yml) promotes verified dev versions to main:

  • Runs conflict and regression test gates.
  • Pulls the currently deployed dev image from Amazon ECR.
  • Promotes image tags (vX.Y.Z, prod-latest), pushes to ECR, and serves on production without building from source.
  • Polls live production healthcheck until HTTP 200 is confirmed.

12. Agent Extension Pack (Open Standards)

Personal Lifecycle Tracker packages an Agent Extension Pack conforming to the Agent Plugins 1.0/1.1 Open Standard (agent-plugins.org / AAIF):

13. Security, Audit & DevOps Hardening

Comprehensive security audits and hardening artifacts under security/ and ops/:
